“When I realized that I had a dim relationship with my own culture, I began this series. I wanted a better understanding of the Southern culture that I was raised in, but never, truly, identified with. These strangers were photographed in a way that emphasizes their relationship to the environment I met them in. Doing so was a way for me to understand my culture and garner a sense of place within it. I understood that these people knew that they were home.”
